a bit about me

maybe you’d like to know how I got here . . .

I was practically born with a book in my hand, so it’s no surprise that I ended up in the publishing business. As a lifelong grammar nerd, junior high spelling bee champ, and lover of language, I knew I was destined for the literary realm. But it wasn’t until I realized at some point that I possessed the “instinct gene” when it comes to writing and editing—a gift that allows me to innately feel what makes excellent writing and to easily assume the voices of my authors—that I knew being an editor was my calling. Well, that and the fact that I’ve voraciously read books on grammar, writing, and language all my life (for fun . . . see, I said “nerd”), and I mentally edit everything, all the time, because I simply can’t help it (another sign that a person’s been tapped for the editing call).

In 2011, I took my editing skills, as well as my expertise in graphic and book design, and established The Book Doctor Is In, a one-stop-shop partnership for authors who wish to self-publish books of excellence. Since then, I have relished taking nearly 60 authors by the hand and transforming their manuscripts into the books they’ve dreamed of—from laser-focused editing and proofreading to engaging, audience-targeted cover and unique interior design—rivaling or exceeding traditional house publications. I’m honored to have been a trusted book production partner for some of the most accomplished coaches, educators, entrepreneurs, and writers of inspirational nonfiction and memoir, several of which have won notable awards, including the 2015 IPBA (Independent Book Publishers Association) Benjamin Franklin award in the category Best New Voice: Nonfiction; the National Indie Excellence Award; and the Outdoor Writers of Canada Book Award.

In addition, I’ve been a corporate editor for Parker Aerospace for four years, a webinar presenter for IBPA and SpeakerMatch, a featured speaker in the WritePublishSell conference, and a regular guest on Your Partner in Success Radio, along with guesting on several other outstanding podcasts. Since 2013, I’ve been privileged to be in partnership with She Writes Press as a top layout artist, where I’ve designed over 60 distinct interiors of fiction, nonfiction, and memoir for their authors.

After working with and talking to numerous nonfiction writers, I saw the need for a comprehensive online course that would walk them through developing their ideas into a sound book structure with clear goals—and Idea to Brilliant Book Structure was born. I’ve always been drawn to teaching as well as writing, so being a course creator—and having the opportunity to help aspiring authors realize their publishing dream in yet another way—is an honor and a thrill for me.

Oh! And did I mention I’m a writer of fiction? My self-proclaimed “first novel worth publishing” is in the final editing stage and will hopefully meet the world in 2018.
